Highland Dance (Boys):Highland dance originated in large part with highland warriors who would dance over and around swords in one dance and on a targe (a shield with a sharp spike of steel coming out of the center) in another. The dances done today still require the stamina & agility the military leaders would look for in their retinue at arms but in a safe way (no spikes of steel involved). The plyometric element of the dance form will help athletes with their power and speed.

Highland Dance (Girls): Although the Sword dance and the Highland Fling referenced in the Boys Highland description are also danced by girls today, Highland dance has transformed into a style that also has a strong foundation in ballet. This style of dance is great for perfectionists, complements the demands of sports by building strong legs and stamina and utilizes ballet technique in a new way. Highland is also accessible to those with little to no dance background

Highland ( Intermediate & Up):  Technique for 2012 Championship Steps will be highlighted and applied to innovative choreographies in this class for dancers who already know the Fling, Sword, Seann Triubhas, Lilt & Flora.

Ballet students in Ballet I and above must wear hair in a bun, braid or twist at the back of the head (so instructor can see the neck).  Ballet students in Pre-Primary and Primary Ballet must also have hair neatly pulled back and off the neck but a ponytail is acceptable.  If your child is coming straight from school, please send in a labeled zip lock bag which contains a small brush, hair elastics, barrettes and bobby pins.  Bun covers are also very helpful.  We will keep these supplies at the studio and help students with their hair once they arrive.

The TINY ACORN in Waterbury carries Capezio dance attire, shoes and accessories.  Conveniently located at 70 S. Main Street (directly in front of the Village Market).  802-244-6663.  Owner, Sally Dain.

CHANGE OF INFORMATION

Please notify us immediately if there are any changes to your contact information so we can keep all records and emergency contact information up to date.  You can email us or drop us a note in the tuition payment box.

CLASS ATTENDANCE

Please notify us via email or phone if your child will be absent for class.  For safety purposes, we always account for all children.  Regular attendance at class is very important.  It is difficult for the rest of the class when students are absent, especially when the class is working on choreography.  Excessive absenteeism may result in removal from the class.

CONCERNS

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.  We are always available for you via phone, email or in-person.

FOOD & DRINK

No gum, candy, food or drinks (except water) are allowed on the studio floor.  Students may consume food and drinks in the waiting room only.  Students must be respectful of the studio and clean up after themselves.  Students who come to class straight from school should bring a healthy, energy providing snack to consume before class.

LOST AND FOUND

Please clearly label all dance shoes and attire.  There is a lost and found receptacle in the dressing room.  Please check this regularly for belongings left at the studio.

OBSERVING CLASS

Classes may be observed through the windows in the waiting rooms. There will be special observation days when family and friends will be invited to observe class in the studio.

RECITAL COSTUMES

Costumes are ordered through several professional costumes companies and because we do not “mark-up” our costumes they must be ordered no later than December 15th to get the best pricing available.  Students will be measured for costumes in the fall.  Costumes start arriving in March.  If a student joins a class after costumes have been ordered, he/she will have to pay the full current price for that costume plus shipping.

SHOE & ATTIRE RECYCLE

Please send in any dance shoes or attire that your child has outgrown.  We have a recycle box at the studio.  Also, if you are in need of shoes or attire for your child, let us know and we can check the box.

STUDIO CLOSING

If the studio is closed due to inclement weather or an emergency, there will be a message on the studio phone and the website. We DO NOT automatically close the studio if Waterbury area schools are closed, so please check.  We try to schedule make-up classes when we close the studio.  These classes are not always scheduled on the same day/time as the regularly scheduled class.

STUDIO RULES

No gum chewing, foul language or any behavior which is deemed inappropriate or unacceptable. Students must be positive participants in class at all times and kind to one another.  GMPA does not refund tuition when a student is removed for unacceptable conduct.  Please review “Student Manners” with your child.
