FOUNDER & EXECUTIVE/ ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Laurie Flaherty

Laurie Flaherty, founder & executive/artistic director of Green Mountaiin Performing ArtsLaurie's passion for dance started as early as she can remember and she has been dancing ever since. She started her training in ballet and gymnastics at 4 years old and started dancing competitively at 9 years old. While growing up right outside of Boston, Laurie had had the opportunity to study dance and train with many outstanding teachers, but she received most of her inspiration from talented dancer and choreographer, Kerry Smith at the Academy of Performing Arts. Laurie went on to perform with an award winning jazz dance company directed by Smith for 6 years where she had the opportunity to dance, tour and study with renowned jazz dancers such as Joe Tremaine and Rhee and Rennie Gold. She has studied many forms of dance but has extensive training in jazz, hip hop, ballet and creative/modern dance. In 2005, Laurie was finally able to combine her two passions in life, dance and working with children, into her full-time career. She taught over 80 students through her private dance program "All That Dance" and she also taught dance at Harwood Union High School. Laurie was a contributing author to the book Fit Families (2009).   She continues to further her own study of dance by taking master classes from well known choreographers around the country, attending teacher training workshops and working on developing and writing her own syllabi for classes. Laurie received her certification in Early Childhood Ballet from Beverly Spell in 2008 and in 2011, she completed a 40-hour course in Brain Compatible Dance Teaching Methods with renowned dance educator, Anne Green Gilbert at SDIT in Seattle.  Laurie loves to teach and she enjoys working with students of all ages and abilities. She strongly believes that dance in all its forms is incredibly beneficial to the body, mind and spirit and that the study and mastery of movement can help children and adults to feel better and gain more confidence in their daily lives. Laurie lives in Waterbury with her very supportive husband and their four wonderful children who range in age from two to twelve.
